Follow these simple friendly steps to build your Northerly Nook in a few hours.
Updates! We have made some improvements to our designs since we recorded the videos below. Please read the following notes carefully before beginning your assembly:
Corner section assembly order
- We've revised the assembly order for the corner assembly. Look for small shallow drilled dots in the corner of each corner assembly pieces. Start with all the parts with one dot, then assemble the ones with two dots, then three dots etc.
- The cushion for the shorter leg of your Northerly Nook will extend over the corner section seat. So we want the corner section seat door to open the same direction as the seat doors in the shorter straight section. Keep this in mind when you attach the stationary hinge parts to the L-shaped corner section bottom shelf. We'll add a picture here soon to better illustrate this.
Straight section notes
- Some of your straight leg bulkheads will have big holes in them and some of them may be solid. The ones with big holes go on the outsides of your benches and the solid one(s) (if you have them) go in the middle.
- You can assemble the straight sections in the order of the video, but we have found that it's even easier if you first lay the back plate on the ground and tap each bulkhead into it first.
Final assembly
- It should be obvious where to install the couplers between the separate units; there are special slots for these cut into the edges of the big bulkhead holes. That's one of the reasons why the bulkheads have holes through them. The other reason is so you can retrieve your credit card when it falls down between the end cap and the under-seat storage compartment.
- Once your units are coupled together, we'd prefer if you connect your straight sections to wall studs. This keeps them rigid if someone stands or sits heavily on the edge of the endmost seats. We've provided two L-brackets for each straight section. Open the backrest doors and find the closest stud to each end of the straight section. Attach the long ends of the L-brackets to the bottom shelf of the backrest storage (using the flathead screws in your kit) and the short ends of the L-brackets to the wall (using long screws as appropriate).
Door hinge adjustment
- Once you attach your hinges and click your doors into position you will see three adjustment screws. These allow you to fine-tune the positions of the doors to get the gaps between doors to be nice and even… if you are that kind of person. Each screw allows one degree of motion: up/down, left/right, and in/out. It's a bit of a mind puzzle, like truing a bicycle wheel. If you want to rotate a door, you raise one hinge and lower the other one. If you want to move a door left or right, be sure you make this adjustment in both hinges.
Soft closure parts (if you chose this optional add-on)
- Only after you have made all the adjustments you want is it time to add the soft closure parts. These come in two types: Click-in and screw-in.
- Every single hinge gets a click-in piece. Just click it in.
- In addition to this, each underseat door gets a pair of screw-in ones. Use the flathead screws provided with your kit. You'll find pilot holes already drilled in the bulkheads back near your underseat door hinges. Note there are two pairs of holes; this is so the screws for the piece on one side of a bulkhead don't interfere with the screws on the other side of the bulkhead. For each compartment, put both the pieces in either the near or far position.
- For the underseat door in the corner, there is only one place you can install them so you can't get it wrong.
- The screw-in pieces have an adjustment screw. Turn this until the grey plastic plunger is as high as it will go, and then back it off just a little bit; if it's fully extended it is a little sticky.
