The total cost of your project depends on its size, where you live, and which options you choose. Your kit comes with all (both) the tools you need to assemble them. See our Pricing page for example pricing, or design your own Nook for an instant quote.
Shape and size
This is up to you! Your assembly could be U-shaped, L-shaped, or just a straight bench. Our standard depth and height are 26" and 34" respectively, but these can be tweaked to accommodate your space and needs.
If you would like storage compartments behind the backrests, we recommend 24" or 26" deep. If space is an issue or you don't need the extra backrest storage, then they can be as narrow as 22". Or we can eliminate the backrests altogether for a 20" depth.
The Wood
By default our kits are cut from elegant, robust 3/4" (18mm actually) clear-coated Euro-core Baltic birch plywood. This zero-VOC recipe has a 13-layer cut edge that is solid and beautiful all the way through. The veneer has an occasional knot patch.
This birch product is certainly your best value for a beautiful and sturdy result. If you need to match existing cabinets we can sometimes source alternative veneers such as maple and walnut. We can also cut your project from uncoated material if you prefer to stain, coat, or paint it yourself.

Cushions
For true coziness and elegance, we highly highly recommend our cushions! They are wonderfully comfortable, long-lasting, and are hand-made by seasoned marine upholsterers to exactly fit your bench or booth. This is your chance to personalize your room with a lovely lane of color and texture.
We use a 3" thick, high-density foam with a published life of 12-18 years. This is wrapped in Dacron batting to plump out your covers for a neat, wrinkle-free look.
Fabric
Though not an exclusive list, here are some of our preferred fabrics for your Northerly Nook cushions:
Revolution
Revolution fabric is chemical-free and manufactured in North Carolina. It's durable, stain repellent, and can be cleaned with common household products. Their website allows for free sample orders! They have a great variety of fabrics, from chenilles to tweeds to patterns. Standard double rub tests at 30,000.
Sunbrella Canvas
Sunbrella is fully waterproof acrylic-coated canvas. It's important to keep in mind that this is marine canvas, so it does not have a typical home-decor aesthetic. Standard double rub tests at 40,000.
Naugahyde Vinyl
Naugahyde is the best option for restaurants and high-traffic areas. This fabric is waterproof and easy to clean and maintain. Standard double rub tests at 250,000.
Sailrite Fabric
Sailrite offers lots of pretty and durable options from a variety of manufacturers. There are fabrics from tweeds to chenilles to herringbone weaves to prints. Please see each individual fabric's specifications regarding waterproofness and abrasion testing.
